Claretians Need Help
with Typhoon Relief
As you are already aware, Typhoon Haiyan is the strongest tropical cyclone ever to make landfall. At about 370 miles wide with sustained winds of 195 mph (gusting to 235 mph), it tore through the Philippines on November 7–8, bringing with it a 17-foot storm surge in some places. The death toll continues to rise, and many people are still missing.
Our Claretian seminarians and brothers in Tacloban, Iloilo, Ormoc, Leyte, and Cebu were among those devastated by the storm. With such wide-spread destruction, communication has been a challenge, but the latest news is that our community in Ormoc has suffered greatly. The chapel and the pastoral center next to our mission have also been destroyed. The entire roof of the building where our novices slept was torn off by the wind.
Most tragic, however, is the loss of our ministerial resources. Without the facilities and supplies necessary to continue our work in this time of profound need, our abilities to minister to the people in these communities is greatly restricted. We will, of course, continue to minister to their spirit and faith, but we are anxious to begin rebuilding so we can also offer safe places for the people to pray and to renew their sense of hope.
It’s estimated that 13 million people—including 4.9 million children—have been affected by the typhoon, and foreign aid has been slow to arrive in the region. Our brothers are already in place, already familiar with and trusted by the local communities . . . we need your help to fortify our relief effort.
We ask for your prayers for our brothers and all those affected by this storm. With your support and the strength of the Lord, we will rebuild and continue our mission of working for those in need.
